Louisville Glassworks

The Snead Building, situated at 815 W. Market St., serves as a versatile establishment housing two operational glass studios, namely the Walk-In Workshop and tours available by appointment.

Between 1850 and 1901, Louisville witnessed the operation of at least seven distinct glass manufacturing factories. Among these, six specialized in the production of utilitarian bottles, while the remaining one focused on crafting window and plate glass. In 1850, the inaugural glass bottle and jar-making enterprise emerged under the name "Kentucky Glass Works," which by 1855 had transitioned to "Louisville Glass Works," as evident on some of their embossed whiskey flasks from the 1850s and 1860s. However, this firm ceased operations in 1873 and is unrelated to the former glassmaking business known as "Louisville Glassworks."

In 1896, Edwin Penna initiated operations, marking the commencement of a lineage that has seen five generations of Penna ownership.

Historically recognized as the Snead Manufacturing Building, this downtown location was added to the National Register in 1978. Snead was renowned for constructing numerous iron buildings nationwide. Following the destruction of the original structure in a fire, the architect was instructed to create a "first-class fireproof power building."

Although the Louisville Glassworks business closed its doors in 2012, glass artistry continues to thrive within its walls.

Since 2012, the Louisville Glassworks building has become the residence of Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery, which relocated from its previous NuLu district location. It also houses the Mark Payton Glass Center, The Foundry at Glassworks, and various other enterprises on its upper floors.

Notably, the Glassworks building remains home to one of the largest privately owned hot glass studios in the nation, as well as a nationally acclaimed glass art gallery that features artists from around the world.
